Newcastle United looking to implement £20 tickets for away fans at St James' Park
9 October 2013
It has today been revealed that Newcastle United are looking to implement a reciprocal deal whereby they will charge £20 to away fans at St James' Park, as long as the visiting club does the same for Newcastle fans in the corresponding fixture.
This news comes hot on the heels of the Premier League putting aside £4 million a season for the next 3 years, split equally between all Premier League clubs with the sole purpose of offering something back to their travelling fans. This news was revealed by us in August and we went on to comment about Arsenal's plans to implement their share of this fund.
BSM members and followers will be aware that at the start of 2013 we were invited by the Football Supporters' Federation to discuss plans for their Score 'Twenty Is Plenty' campaign. This proposal would see all Premier League teams charge £20 per ticket for away fans and help relieve some of the financial burden heaped upon travelling football fans, up and and down the country. Naturally we put our full support behind these plans.
In June we were the Arsenal supporters' group which joined the Liverpool group Spirit of Shankly and many other fans from other clubs, in a demonstration march to the offices of the Premier League. That day we represented fans of Arsenal in a meeting with the Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore, together with supporters' groups from Manchester United, Spurs, Liverpool and the Football Supporter's Federation. At the meeting we discussed the price of watching football and put it to Scudamore that measures needed to be taken to assist fans financially, starting with help for fans who travel up and down the country supporting their team.
Following this campaigning came the news that the Premier League had put aside this fund for away fans, and Premier League clubs are now offering subsidised travel to away games or money off ticket prices. A great start, but of course a lot more needs to be done.
This is why we applaud the news that Newcastle are willing to put in place this reciprocal £20 ticket deal and we encourage Arsenal to join them in this initiative.
As mentioned already, a lot more needs to be done to help ease the financial burden on football fans and we recognise that our home fans also pay high prices to come and support their club. This is why we'll continue to push for a fairer deal for matchgoing Arsenal fans.
