Heavy-handed stewarding at Emirates:
we want to hear from you
27 November 2013
By now it's well known that at our Capital One Cup match against Chelsea, the stewarding in blocks 18 and 19 left a lot to be desired. You can read an account of that night by clicking here.
A few days ago we took part in an atmosphere special of the podcast 'A Bergkamp Wonderland'. During this, the topic of stewarding was covered after it was mentioned that on Saturday's against Southampton, stewards were out in force, virtually in people's faces telling them to sit down and generally causing a nuisance. We mentioned the fact that Arsene Wenger and the players have called on numerous occasions for an improvement to the atmosphere, but that stadium management seem to want people to sit down and keep quiet. Following last night's match against Marseille there were a number of reports from fans complaining about stewards and in truth some of what we've heard has been shocking, in terms of what they'd seen or been subjected to. Although on the pitch the team's performances have created a positive vibe in the stands, more than ever it seems that our stadium management team is on the warpath, making life difficult for supporters who want to enjoy the matchday experience.
We therefore ask that if you have any issues with regard to the stewarding at Arsenal, please let us know. Email us at info@blackscarfafc.co.uk and we'll take this up with the club. If you want to send us pictures or video footage of individual stewards then that's fine. And rest assured, if you don't want us to publish your name we will ensure your privacy is respected.
Added to this, as we're the supporters' group that tells it like it is, we will be publishing the experiences of our fans on this website. The club encourages people to text in at games and report other supporters over their behaviour so we feel it's only fair that on the flip side, fans have the chance to make their experiences known. There'll be no brushing under the carpet from us while supporters of The Arsenal are mistreated.
Finally, it has to be said that by and large the matchday stewards at Emirates Stadium are reasonable with fans and use common sense; so this isn't an initiative to tar all stewards with the same brush. But while there are some who consistently hassle and cause issues with fans, we will be there to feed this back to Arsenal and request that appropriate action is taken.
Football is about passion, it's about enjoyment and it's about the supporters. Without the fans, football is nothing.
