Arsenal's Black Scarf Movement supports
'No to Hull Tigers' campaign
13 December 2013
The current owner of Hull City AFC, Dr Assem Allam has made it clear that he will push ahead with changing the name of the 109-year old club to Hull Tigers.
Allam states that removing the "lousy" and "common" City from the name and re-branding to Hull Tigers will create a much more marketable brand, enabling the club to build revenue generating opportunities. In our opinion, a worthwhile Marketing function at the club would be able to introduce ways of making Hull City more marketable; throwing the baby out with the bathwater by changing the club's name and historical identity we feel is, quite simply, lazy marketing.
Football in England is about the fans, it's about tradition, it's about passion. We have already seen examples of this tradition being torn up with Cardiff City being forced to ditch their traditional blue strip for red. We've even seen it at Arsenal with our change of club crest in 2002 and removal of the historic latin motto 'Victoria Concordia Crescit'. The design agency who created our new crest said of this "we removed a town crest allied to Islington and some irrelevant Latin text". It's this lack of knowledge, lack of consideration that threatens to sever all ties with the roots of our game.
We therefore fully back the 'No to Hull Tigers' campaign which has been launched by Hull City supporters. The group has launched a petition and is seeking the support of all football fans to help apply pressure which will ensure the name of their club is protected. To sign this petition, click here.
Without the fans, football is nothing.
