Following another lacklustre transfer window, Arsenal
should cancel their planned 3% price increase
1 February 2014
Last summer was frustrating for Arsenal fans, given Ivan Gazidis's comments that the club would finally compete in the transfer market only to see three months of inactivity. The last minute signing of Mesut Ozil eased this slightly but our squad was still lacking in certain areas while tens of millions of pounds sat in the club's bank account.
We'd put ourselves in the position of needing more, following three months of dawdling in the summer, therefore the January window became vital to our chances of challenging for honours this season. Despite this, once again we've chosen to keep the money banked and make do with a squad which is now starting to feel the strain, struggling with suspension and en ever-increasing injury list. More bit part players have left the club either permanently or on loan, and coming in we have a single loan signing in the form of Kim Kallstrom; a man who has played a handful of games for Spartak Moscow this season.
The continued lack of investment in the squad would be a bit more forgivable, were Arsenal not raising ticket prices from next season. Already paying the highest prices in football, our loyal fans are being pressed for even more cash - all the while the club sits on tens of millions, which is now even further bolstered by the recently announced £150m sponsorship deal with Puma.
What is the point of pressing our loyal supporters for even more money when it will remain in the club's bank account and not be used to strengthen our squad?
We therefore demand that the Board of Arsenal cancel the proposed ticket price increase for next season. Our core support has had enough of contributing more and more to the club's already healthy bank balance and not seeing proper investment on the pitch.
This slap in the face for matchgoing supporters is one too many and it's about time there was Financial Fair Play for fans - the lifeblood of the game. Without the fans, football is nothing.
