Arsenal fans unite and call for the club to pay
London Living Wage
16 October 2014
It has been highlighted previously that for many matchday staff, Arsenal's pay rate is based on the National Minimum Wage.
Recognised as an insufficient rate of pay, especially for those living and working in London, Citizens UK has campaigned for employers to adopt and pay what is now known as the Living Wage; in other words the amount felt necessary to meet the basic costs of living. More than 500 businesses in London have adopted this idea and pay the Living Wage, but no Premier League football clubs have opted to do this despite the huge revenues they bring in from commercial deals, hugely increased television broadcast rights, and ever-increasing ticket sales where fans continue to be punished in the pocket.
Living Wage is an issue we've previously raised with Arsenal, only to be told the club were satisfied that their pay scale was competitive. We also highlighted a fantastic open letter to Ivan Gazidis by Martin Wroe in May, where he urged Arsenal to do the right thing, be leaders and adopt the Living Wage pay scale to help matchday staff meet the costs of living. You can read Martin's letter here.
With this issue still very prevalent and Arsenal failing to act, the four main Arsenal supporters' groups and a number of Arsenal bloggers, podcast sites and active social media users have joined forces to once more, call on Arsenal to do the right thing. This initiative has been led by Mark King and you can read a copy of the letter to Ivan Gazidis on The Gooner website. Click here to see the article.
